If You Know Nothing This is the Book You NeedGreat book. I’m serious, I didn’t know anything at all about solar for ham radio, but this book explained everything. I have bought other books on the subject and got zero usable information. Mr. Eccleston got me over that and now I am in the process of building my solar system to keep my radio going in the great outdoors. He really took the beginner into account when writing this book and walks you through every step. Plus he doesn’t try to oversell when a less expensive but acceptable option would work just as well. Setting up a solar system is doable for anyone with this book.

Right to the point! The author of this book cuts out all of the fluff and delivers only the necessary information. This approach definitely saved me time while improving my overall knowledge retention. I never lost track of the intended theme of the material.

love this book! Finally a book in plan language that I can understand!! this is the 3rd book I ‘ve bought trying to grasp the concept. Large print, lots of pictures that really explain what is going on, and easy to follow. Would highly recommend.

Great Beginning for a Novice, Refresher for IntermediateI think this has something for both the novice and the intermediate. For a novice, this is a great way to become familiar with the components that could be used with a solar generator. With the information that was provided, I feel I could comfortably do a DIY solar generator (with instructions from a internet source) or know what I am looking for in a pre-built solar generator. For the intermediate, it can act as a quick refresher. The chapters are laid out in small chunks, with excellent pictures and drawings (in color), for each of the components. The chapters explain what the component are for, and how to use them, or connect them in a system. These are brief chapters, so one will not be overwhelmed with excessive material, but with that said one will not learn all the reasons behind each component. He has provided quick and dirty mathematics so there is not a lot of math required, but he has shown where to obtain more detailed math calculators, of one wants more details.I am sure there are things that are missing in this book, but ‘What I do not know, I do not know.’I personally feel more confident in what I would need to look for, in a solar generator (pre-built or DIY). This for myself, was the book I was looking for, prior to embarking on my next step towards either ‘off the grid’ or simple back up of existing electrical reliance, whether it be for a few days, or longer, or just for a man cave (or she shed).

Good and to the point!Provided the fundamentals to start an off grid power source. George got right to the key points. Easy cleared up the mystery around solar setups.

Everything you need to knowI am solar illiterate I have no knowledge of solar but I want to power a cabin in the woods with off grid solar power. This book is excellent for the beginner, the author gives you the info you need in an easy to understand format. I would recommend this book if you are like me with limited knowledge of solar.

A good beginner’s intro, leaves you wanting more. With very little knowledge of electronics, I’m now confident I could hook up solar panels to batteries and operate small devices with it. I doubt you could transfer these skills to wiring up an entire house for solar, but if you are away from civilization, car camping maybe, and want some free electricity, this book will do it for you. It avoids burying you in technobabble, which is good if you just want to do it. One thing to know is that the author is British and everything is in metric, so if you’re used to the old Roman system you’ll have to convert.

Discouraged by fundamental errors eg adding amps in a series circuit. While I appreciate the style attempted some descriptions seem weirdly ambiguous (saying Watts are like the speed electricity travels around a circuit? What?). Other fundamentally important facts seem to be perhaps dangerously wrong. Page 11 states that amps are added in a series circuit, this is wrong. Voltages across components in a series circuit are added & amps remain the same. If someone deducts the converse & set up a parallel circuit thinking the amps will be the same, they could have problems (like a burnt down house if they don’t fit the right fuse or fit one at all). I feel like I have to be on guard reading this so that I don’t unlearn something, so any useful knowledge is marred. On the other hand I now need to double check every “fact” so it’s a hell of a revision. I’m disappointed but wanted to write the review because at least one factual error in the book could be serious.

In depth knowledgeThis is quite an indepth book of knowledge concerning everything you need to know about solar power in your van.I’m just in the process of of converting my van into a very basic camper, bed, cooking, heating and lighting.I didn’t have any knowledge whatsoever on how to do this, but the more I learn the more confident I’m getting. Well recommended for somebody like me!
